💡 Social Media Do's and Don'ts 💡

👉 It takes practice to fully understand how these tips apply to your day-to-day behavior when it comes to social media etiquette for business, behavior, and what to do or not do.

👉 Here are 10 dos and don'ts when it comes to business social media etiquette:

✅ DO: Watch your grammar and spelling.

The occasional grammar or spelling error isn't the end of the world, but it shouldn't become a habit. Preparing your social media updates in a document or spreadsheet with spell check will help you avoid mistakes. You can also have a colleague proofread your work before sharing it, or use a tool like Grammarly to help you catch more complex errors.

✅ DO: Post regularly.

This leads to the big question: how frequently should you interact with your online community? This varies depending on your company and industry, but a word of advice is once or twice a week. Post irregularly and you'll miss out on opportunities to raise brand awareness, but post frequently and you'll annoy your followers.

✅ DO: Interact with your audience.

Make connections online in the same way that you would in person. You don't always have to be in sales mode; simply having a friendly exchange increases your legitimacy and exposes you to a larger audience, so don't be afraid to jump in.

✅ DO: Help more than you sell.

Who wants their news feed to be flooded with sales pitches all the time? No one. Though you're in business to make money, the vast majority of your social media posts should not be about that.

Remember the 80/20 rule: 80 percent of the content you post or share should be entertaining or informative, while no more than 20% of your social media communication should directly relate to the goods or services you offer.

❌ DON’T: Be needy.

Don't beg your Twitter followers to "please retweet" or your Facebook friends to "like" your page every week. It's perfectly fine to inform your personal account followers that you have business pages and what they can expect if they follow you. However, be strategic. You can still complete those tasks, but you'd be better off earning them through useful, shareable content.

❌ DON’T: Be a spammer.

It's fine to retweet, like, comment, post, and share, but do so in moderation. Nobody wants a single account to dominate their social media feeds. Post promotional content in areas where self-promotion is not permitted. You don't want to leave that impression.

❌ DON’T: WRITE IN ALL CAPS.

ARE YOU MAD AT ME? DID I MAKE A MISTAKE? Stop using all caps! They are not only visually disturbing, but they also convey that you are upset, angry, or aggressive. Use this writing style only for single-word emphasis, such as when something is REALLY important. Always be mindful of the tone you set with your words.

❌ DON’T: #Abuse #Hashtags

By including relevant hashtags, your post is linked to all other posts on that topic and with that hashtag. It's a simple way to organize and search for content on social media networks. That being said, don't turn every word in a post (or a full sentence!) into a hashtag, and don't stuff irrelevant hashtags into your post.

💯 Most importantly, have fun! Using social media for business does not necessarily prevent you from having fun with it! Change things up every now and then. Keep your messages friendly and conversational by using live videos or interactive polls. You'll discover that instead of dreading this aspect of your business, you can enjoy it.

💯 The do's and don'ts of social media etiquette for business owners will continue to change as the social media landscape evolves. Maintaining awareness of current best practices and incorporating them into your social media strategy will keep your marketing efforts fresh and your company at the forefront of your customers' minds.
